The most expensive part of your headshot session isn't the photographer — it's the wasted frames. Every hour you're in front of the camera should be an hour producing usable shots. Here's the prep list I actually use.
Two weeks out
- Book the photographer whose style matches your type. Don't hire a moody-cinematic shooter if you go out for comedy. Your reel already tells them what to cast you as; your headshot should match.
- Don't change your hair drastically. No new bangs, no new color. Reps are going to use these photos for a year+.
- Start skincare. Whatever you usually do, do it more. Sleep, water, moisturize. Skin is the #1 thing retouching can't actually save.
The day
- Bring 4-6 wardrobe options. Solid colors, flattering necklines, no distracting patterns. Avoid white and pure black unless your photographer specifically asks for them.
- Eat something. Low blood sugar reads as "tired" on your face. A banana and water 45 minutes before is a freebie.
- Arrive early. Not two minutes before. Fifteen. Your face needs to settle after the commute.
- Trust your team. If the photographer says try a different look, try it. You're not there to direct.
After
Don't pick your favorites the same night. Sleep on it. Better, ask your rep and one honest friend. You are the worst judge of your own face.
